Volkswagen India enjoys successful 2018 INRC season
Volkswagen Motorsport India enjoyed a successful run in the 2018 season of Indian National Rally Championship, with the manufacturer’s Polo and Polo 2 rally cars bagging 10 victories and 37 podiums across all classes.
Several teams fielded Volkswagen India’s Polo in the INRC2 category, including Arka Motorsport, Snap Racing and Team Champions, making the car the most represented one on the grid.
Arka’s Karna Kadur even took the fight to Mahindra duo Gaurav Gill and Amittrajit Ghosh for the overall title after winning the Chikmagalur round, but ultimately had to settle for the third spot in the standings.
He, however, comprehensively claimed the INRC2 title with three victories and five podiums.
The Polo was also nearly inconvincible in the INRC3 category, grabbing 14 out of 15 podium spots.
Part of Polo’s success was down to the kind of technical support Volkswagen provided to its customer teams. A team of technicians and mechanics was present at every round, supporting privateers with technical expertise as well as spare parts.

Volkswagen also fielded its higher-spec Polo R2 car in three of the five rounds of the championship as a factory team.
Former rally ace Vicky Chandhok returned from retirement to compete in Rally Chennai, while veteran racer Akbar Ebrahim likewise drove a rally car for the first time in several years in Coimbatore. Finally, Volkswagen was represented in the season-concluding Popular Rally by automotive journalist Sirish Chandran.
Chandhok and Ebrahim finished third in the their class, while Chandran was classified second in his category.
“2018 has been a brilliant year for us," Mr. Sirish Vissa, Head of Volkswagen Motorsport India said. "I am extremely happy to see the Polo being successful across categories, especially bagging the INRC 2 and INRC 3 titles.
"There was a lot of learning for the teams and the drivers through the year, including for us at the factory. Our Polo R2 ran superbly and grabbed podium in each of its entry and that speaks volumes of its potential.”
“We are now all set to build rally cars for our customers across INRC 1, INRC 2 and INRC 3 category and deliver them before the start of the season.”
