Daruvala tops final day of GP3 testing
Jehan Daruvala, one of India’s brightest Formula 1 prospects, topped the timesheets on the final day of GP3 testing in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.
After making his GP3 debut last weekend, Daruvala stayed in the UAE for three day of post-season testing at the Yas Marina Circuit.
The 20-year-old put on a promising show in the first two days, finishing second on both occasions for two different teams - the MP Motorsport with which he raced in GP3 as well as Spanish outfit Campos.
For the final day he stuck with Campos, setting an early benchmark of 1m55.093s in the first hour of the morning session.
He improved by three thousandths of a second in the afternoon and that time would remain unbeaten until the chequered flag, with Jenzer's Tuki Tsunoda coming closest at 1m55.136s.
Daruvala’s Day 3 chart-topping time, however, wasn’t fastest of the entire test; that honour went to Niko Kari who set a time of 1m54.683s0 on Thursday.
The Indian driver himself posted a quicker time on Day 1, with his 1m54.689 lap from Thursday over four tenths quicker than what he managed today.
Daruvala’s post-season test outing came as he closes on a deal to join the new FIA Formula 3 series, which replaces GP3 on the F1 support bill from next year.
He is likely to race for Italian powerhouse Prema in a bid to fight for the title, ending his association with the Carlin team with which he competed in European F3 for the last two seasons.
