Juncadella Wins In Slippery Monza.
Monza, 12 September. Breathtaking was perhaps the best way to describe the first Formula BMW Europe race of the Monza weekend. On a still damp track after a torrential downpour a couple of hours before Daniel Juncadella (ES/Eurointernational) took his first win of the year, followed by Felipe Nasr (BR/Eurointernational) with Robin Frijns (NL/Josef Kaufmann Racing) in third and making sure of the Rookie Cup title.
When the cars left the grid it was Timmy Hansen (SE/Mucke Motorsport) who made the best start, but right behind him as they went into the first chicane was Nasr from seventh on the grid. At the end of the lap Hansen led from Nasr and Juncadella, while pole sitter, Jack Harvey (GB/Fortec Motorsport), had dropped back to fourth.
On lap two Juncadella had got into the lead in front of Hansen and then it was Nasr, Rupert Svendsen-Cook (GB/Raikkonen Robertson Racing) and Jim Pla (FR/DAMS). At this point Frijns had only made up one place from tenth on the grid, but he was on the move.
Svendsen-Cook was moving rapidly from sixth on the grid and was second by the end of lap five with the gap to Nasr, who was then in front, 0.1secs. However, it was even tighter to the cars behind as the timekeepers had the gaps from Svendsen-Cook to Nasr and then Nasr to Javier Tarancon (ES/DAMS) as 0.0secs and 0.0secs.
The positions changed several times during the laps but Svendsen-Cook led across the line at the end of laps five and six. On lap seven it was Juncadella in front and he stayed there to the end, when he led his team- mate home by 0.4secs. For Frijns it was eighth by lap three, sixth by lap five, fifth by lap six and then third by lap eight. Unfortunately Svendsen- Cook's chances went on lap eight when he damaged his car's front wing.
While the accidents were numerous, it was an engine failure that brought retirement for Michael Christensen (DK/Mucke Motorsport) after just a lap and a half. In the end it was six of the 27 starters who ended up in retirement.
1st - Round 15 Daniel Juncadella (ES/Eurointernational): "It was really exciting and I had a lot of fights with other drivers. It is always like this here with long straights as you are always fighting, and with the damp conditions it is a bit harder but very exciting. I knew I had a really good car and a really strong performance. In qualiyfing I couldn't get pole, but I was focusing on
winning this race. I managed to do a good first lap, but not a good start. Later in the race I had Rupert Svendsen-Cook in front and I was pushing with him to pull away from the group, but Felipe Nasr was really fast and so could catch us. But he is my team-mate and we knew our goal. We can help each other and that is what we did in the end to pull away. "
2nd - Round 15 Felipe Nasr (BR/Eurointernational): "My start was fantastic as I was able to go from seventh to second in the first chicane. Then on the second lap I was in front and was alone so had to do my times by myself with no tow. Everybody started to catch me again.I then made a small mistake and Daniel Juncadella passed me. From then we tried to work with each other. I dropped back some positions again, then I was back to third and then to second. Second for me was very good and let's see if I can do the same tomorrow as the race was very exciting and I am very happy."
3rd - Round 15 and Top Rookie: Robin Frijns (NL/Josef Kaufmann Racing): "This is my sixth time on the podium and from tenth position, a bit like Spa. It is a great feeling as I passed a lot of cars, with only two guys I did not get by. The car was really good and I have to thank my team for that. I was slip streaming and for the last three laps I was alone so could not follow the two in front closely. Before I came here this was not my favourite track, but after this race I have had a lot of fun so like racing here."
