Sherco TVS rider Lorenzo Santolino set the 10th quickest time in Thursday’s marathon stage as he continued to make a strong impression on his Dakar debut.
Santolino completed the 405 km special in 3hr57m32s, edging out Hero MotoSports’ rising star Oriol Mena by just 14 seconds.
However, Mena remains one place ahead of Santolino in the overall standings, holding the 12th spot ahead of Friday’s stage 5.
Michael Metge finished the stage in 17th position to improve to 26th in the general standings, while Adrien Metge slipped one place to 16th after lodging the 21st quickest time in the stage.
Meanwhile, India’s sole Dakar finisher CS Santosh (Hero) successfully tackled the marathon stage to finish 51st at the end of the day. He occupies 44th spot in the overall order, 13 places behind teammate Joaquim Rodrigues.
Santosh started the rally inside the top 20, but lost a huge chunk of time in stage 3 when his visor picked up fog and water droplets. He also dropped his bike in a ditch after being caught out by a poorly marked waypoint.
Meanwhile, former Raid de Himalaya winner Aravind KP (Sherco TVS) set the 78th quickest time to end 64th in the general classifications.
Aravind is chasing his first Dakar finish after retiring from the previous two editions of the rally.
Stage 5 will take riders for a 776 km stretch (including a 345 km special) between Arequipa and Moquegua, both in Peru, before a rest day on Saturday.
