Hero MotoSports’ Oriol Mena jumped inside the top 10 in the Dakar Rally’s overall standings at the end of Tuesday, while Indian rider Aravind KP (Sherco TVS) enjoyed his best stage of the 2019 event so far.

Tuesday’s stage 8 ran from San Juan de Marcona to Pisco, with riders covering a competitive distance of 360 km.

Mena set the 11th quickest time of the day, just 24m38s down on stage topper Toby Price (KTM), but moved up to 10th in the general classifications following the retirement of Ricky Brabec (Honda).

Should he be able to hold on to his position or improve further in the final two days, his team Hero will secure a top 10 finish at Dakar for the second consecutive year.

Joaquim Rodrigues finished right on tail of his teammate  Mena in the third last stage of the cross-country rally, just under two minutes behind the Spaniard.

With that result, he also made several position and now sits 18th in the general standings.

There was also joy at Sherco TVS as Michael Metge lodged the 10th fastest time of the stage, beating both Mena and Rodrigues.

However, due to troubles earlier in the rally, he occupies only 24th spot in the overall rankings.

His brother Adrien Merge sits just two places behind in 26th after finishing a strong 14th in stage 8.

Finally, Aravind continued to make steady progress up the order, finishing 39th in both stage and overall classifications.

He remains on course to become India’s second rider to finish Dakar after CS Santosh, who was forced to retire from the 2019 event after a crash.
