Dakar 2019, Stage 7: Both Hero riders inside top 15
Hero MotoSports’ surviving duo of Joaquim Rodrigues and Oriol Mena enjoyed a strong finish to Dakar's seventh stage, while Indian rider Aravind KP also continued his charge up the order.
Monday’s stage 7 was held in the San Juan de Marcona region of Peru, with riders completing a 323 km special on top of a small 64 km transport section.
Rodrigues, who has been a part of the Hero team since its inception, enjoyed his best stage finish of 2019 so far, ending up an applaudable 11th. That result elevates him to 24th in the general classification, with three stages still remaining to break inside the top 20.
Meanwhile, Mena kept up his consistency in only his second Dakar attempt, finishing two position behind his teammate in 13th. He holds the same spot in the overall rankings, the highest of any rider from the two Indian teams.
Over at Sherco TVS, Michael Metge led the charge for the Indo-French squad, finishing 15th in stage 7 to move up to 31st in the overall standings.
His brother Adrien was classified 27th in stage rankings and sits 32nd in the overall classifications.
Finally, Aravind, the sole surviving Indian in Dakar following CS Santosh’s crash-induced exit, set the 46th fastest time of the day for his second successive finish inside the top 50.
He holds 47th position in the general classifications and is on course to become India’s only second Dakar finisher, barring any trouble in the last three stages of the cross-country rally.
Meanwhile, Honda’s Ricky Brabec retook the lead of the bikes class on Monday, with Toby Price (KTM), Adrien van Beveren (Yamaha) and Sam Sunderland (Honda), Pablo Quintanilla (Husqvarna) all within 10 minutes of the American.
